Canvas Bags

I reduced plastic bags!
Whenever we go to the supermarketwe take our "bag of bags." Its a frezer bag with a wine bag and lots and lots and lots of plastic bags inside it! 31 August 2010, 18:46change?
any and every time i go shopping i try to avoid bags when i shop with my friends i decline bags for them or combine everything in one bag that we already have 31 August 2010, 03:14Getting a Carry Bag and Green Bags
I tend to always carry a hemp shoulder bag with me - not only is made from a more sustainable material than say cotton, it is strong and has more room than it appears to, so if I'm out and buy something I always just put it in there. If I know I am going shopping I bring a whole bunch of green bags with me - never can have too many! 17 August 2010, 11:28incentive
When bringing a personal reusable bag at Trader' Joe's for grocery shopping, the customer can participate to a weekly raffle and win $40 in grocery. at the cash register you . This incentive made me NEVER forget to bring along my bag. 25 July 2010, 07:17Bag lady!
I have two Onya bags and try to have at least one with me whenever I go shopping.http://www.onyabags.co.uk/
BTW The Royal College of Nursing also uses re-usable bags at it conferences and i have several of those that I use for work. [Can't take the credit for getting them to do that tho'!] 17 July 2010, 12:13
Challenge yourself - never take home a carrier bag again
I decided a few months ago that I would try never to take a plastic carrier bag from a shop again - they're just so horrible. It took a while to get the hang of how to avoid them but now my whole family does it brilliantly. On the rare occasions when I realise I've bought too much to carry by hand and I don't have a bag for life with me, I feel really disappointed with myself. Spread the message - it's easy when you try. 02 July 2010, 22:00Why Carrefour is coming back to plastic bags?
Last year this huge company stopped giving plastic bag to their costumers for environmental reasons. Yesterday I read it's coming back to them because their costumers complain about having to buy reusable bags instead of having plastic ones for free. I can't understand why is it so hard for people to realise this is a turning point in our struggle against climate change, but I even understand less why once Carrefour made a lot of people rethink about it, they come back to plastic.I bought a cloth bag and always carry it on my pourse, and have couple of big blue Ikea ones on my car, so i don't need any plastic to carry my buyings. 30 June 2010, 07:48
I try to remember to take my bags
I have several bags that were given to me as gifts. I try to remember to take them into the store, but I still struggle with it. When they are in my car I find it easier to remember. They roll up and snap very small so that they fit in my purse too. Sometimes I request no bag when I have few items that I can carry out of the store or put in my purse. 27 June 2010, 22:29choice and plastic bags
bought a watch in choice yesterday and ended up having to see the manager because I didn't want a big plastic bag or any plastic bag to carry it to the car in. The assistant said I had to "for security reasons" what's wrong with just showing the receipt if stopped? 20 June 2010, 10:08Morsbags
At school we are making Morsbags - shopping bags made from old curtains, duvet covers etc. Every Morsbag made means 500 plastic carrier bags are not needed.Find out more & how to set up your own pod - http://www.morsbags.com/ 16 June 2010, 19:22
Baby steps
Everytime I go the the store, I'll just say no. If I buy a small pencil, I say no thanks. I take the receipt and put my stuff in my pockets. Whenever I can, especially the small plastic bags, I don't want them because you can't even use them for garbage bags. 09 June 2010, 17:44I use bags I already own
Whenever I go shopping either for impulse purchasing or planned I tend to take a bag with me, I always go out with my messenger bag (ideal to carry my water bottle) and it can usually hold all my impulse buyings, i also use mostly the self-scan checkouts as you have the automatic choice of using bags as opposed to the wasteful packing styles of some checkout cashiers. Also when buying a sandwich or meal deal at some shops its easier to carry them in your pocket than contantly fishing around in a bag. 24 May 2010, 11:55
Declining plastic bags
Every time I got to the supermarket, I take my own bags. I also pick my fruit and certain vegetables and once through the check out they go straight into my own bags (no see through plastic bags!!)I have suggested it to others but have not seen them do it! 13 May 2010, 16:21
Plastic bags? No thank you!
In Belgium, where I come from, plastic bags are almost banned from supermarkets and public life. Re-usable bags are everywhere, supermarkets have their own. Ofcourse you can question the 'ethic' side of these bags...Some of them have fabric fair trade bags. I bought one last year and I'm still using it to shop! Now, here in Spain, especially in the South where I live, people use a lot of plastic bags. Re-usable bags are not really 'hot' here.
People give me funny looks when I ask them NOT to give me a plastic bag (especially when they tell me it's for free and I still say no) but they always put my stuf in my reusable bag. Sometimes I even get positive comments about it!
So I hope that people do it more! 13 May 2010, 12:34

save plastic bags
i am sad about this its a big problem and we must help about plastic bags :( 01 May 2010, 11:35a plastic bag for ever!!!
http://www.susanbijl.nl/new/index.php!!!decline plastic bags wherever possible
i actually do this most of the time. i keep a small one in my purse just in case i end up shopping. it feels good to help save the earth. 21 April 2010, 06:475 days...
5 days without plastic bags and stil more to come...Used always the same paper bag to the supermarket, no plastic during shoping ever... 04 April 2010, 22:45Hate Plastic Bags
Always was in favour of avoiding using the plastic bags. It clicked in my mind when heard that a dolphin got chocked and died when chewing a plastic bag thinking it was a jellyfish. 03 April 2010, 06:03Plastic Bags
I love doing this action whenever I go into town to shop. I use a plain white canvas bag that I really love. I am glad that I am helping the environment while using my favourite bag!!!:))Try it!! 26 March 2010, 16:55
i did it
FIRST, I FOUND IT NASTY, BUT MY IDEAS CHANGED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made plenty of crafts with the polythene and decided to use jute bags that came with heavily priced prooduts. i've seen places like Kashmir, Ladakh, that do not use plastic bags at all.So good, i thought, if they can do it, so can we!!!!!!!!! It was difficult to convince big retailers but we could easily force the upstreet market..... 21 March 2010, 10:33Say NO to Plastic.
We've invested in canvas shopping bags. Not only are they great for heavy shopping items, they also look pretty cool too. Brings a little of the "hippy" out in me! :-D 21 March 2010, 10:01San Francisco
It's really true when they say that you are a product of your environment. I moved to San Francisco (where you are given the "evil eye" if you don't whip out your own tote at the grocery story) two years ago. I have 2 collapsible bags in my purse at all time. They're about the size of half a dollar when scrunched up. 19 March 2010, 03:35room for improvement
I already use a couple of fabric shopping bags for my own personal shopping, but once a week I go and do a big supermarket shop for work, and end up taking more plastic bags back to work with me. I'll try and remember to take the plastic bags that we already have with me to the supermarket. I'll try and encourage others as well. 18 March 2010, 19:01-
Instead of getting shop bags, my family and I get bags for life, aswell as taking our old plastic bags to shops to use. 16 March 2010, 07:33Culture change
I declined plastic bags four times today when I was buying mother's day presents. Each time I did the person at the till gave me a funny look, as if they'd never seen such a thing before. Part of people's reluctance to decline plastic bags is due to British politeness: id est, people don't like saying no. 14 March 2010, 15:09I use as little as possible
Whenever I buy something, I always try to put it in my college back so I don't end up with loads of bags and so my hands are free when walking around. If I do get a plastic bag for a large item - which is understandable - I always put smaller purchases in the same bag. Then, I take the bag home and reuse it time after time. 13 March 2010, 12:51Use cotton bags
HiI - I always try to carry a folded cotton bag for impromptu shopping. Car boot also contains re-usable or fabric bags for large shopping trips to supermarkts etc. 13 March 2010, 07:41Shopping
Yesterday I went to shopping in a store near my Campus. I ask the cashier not to give me a plastic bag because I alredy brought my own bag. And then I put my goods in my bag. I feel happy because I already saving plastic bags. 10 March 2010, 09:29Never ask a plastic bag!!
Most of the time when I go to bookstore I always say no to take their plastic bag. I usually bring my own bag (school bag) and put all those books I bought in it. Well sometimes I must accept a plastic bag because I didn't bring my own bag but I hope if this already become my habit then one day I will always remember to bring my own bag when I want to go shopping or buy books. 08 March 2010, 15:28no more plastic!
I do it ALWAYS. I think plastic bags should have disappear a long ago. Also my family, some friends and my boyfriend do it, but I think not as fanatically as me... 07 March 2010, 13:06Plsatic Bags
In tesco's i declined the plastics bags 25 February 2010, 15:13It's time to say goodbye, plastic bags!
I have four canvas bags. I put one in my bag, and one in my wife's bag. Then we made a promise that we would go shopping with canvas bags instead of plastic ones. 23 February 2010, 14:06Buying stuff for the dog
just been to buy my dog lots of treats, was asked if i wanted a bag, but i said no because i had enough room in my college bag. 09 February 2010, 14:25Our way
We use reusable bags for shopping, keep them at hand all the time, especialy in the car. Shopping trolley is perfect at the market. We carry and keep our garden products or exchanged with others in wooden or cardboard trays (Get them in your local stores or market when needed). We refuse anything given in plastic bags from friends or family to challenge them 04 February 2010, 13:38plastic bags
to do this action everytime my mum goes shopping i make sure she takes reusable bags with her and makes sure she uses them>>>>>>.reusable grocery bags
I've got a whole bunch of them now and I haven't used plastic bags in ages. I take my own containers to the bulk store and since I recycle or compost almost everything I rarely need plastic bags anyways and I tend to use the bags from products that I do still have to get in packaging (cereal) 02 February 2010, 02:15My presentation at Woodgrange primary school
I did a presentation at Woodgrange primary school with Deborah, we talked to the little kids and told them the damage of plastic bags getting them to join us in declining plastic bags. 29 January 2010, 00:35I'm a PIP!
I co-founded a non-profit organization called Pebble in the Pond (affectionately known as PIP) www.pebpond.com in Powell River, BC. Since 2008, we have been very active in our little community raising awareness of the dangers posed by plastic to our environment and health, and providing practical solutions to replace plastic in everyday life. Right now, we are working on a social enterprise business model to produce cloth bags right here at home, as well as continuing our awareness campaign to move people to reusable bags instead of plastic bags.=D
I work at CVS and we have this program called "green bag tags" in which we reward customers who decline plastic bags. 24 January 2010, 17:26And they are so pretty!
I have quite a collection of adorable canvas bags now that I take with me whenever I plan a shopping trip, and my purse is always large enough to use for small purchases. 21 January 2010, 23:20Getting quite good at this
I have a stash of bags that I take out with me whenever I go shopping. Most places will ask if I want a bag but some don't bother, particularly while it was the Christmas period and the tills were busy. I still feel a bit awkward declining when they pull out the bags then look annoyed because I've refused, but more often than not I forget that because I'm pleased with myself for declining in the first place. I don't understand why plastic bags are still produced, I genuinely don't. 13 January 2010, 22:34Tiger Style - just say no
I have made it a habit to carry a backpack with used plastic bags most places I go. I sometimes offer them to others. Also, when possible, I gently remind other people to skip a bag. Just smile and say 'lets save the planet'. One Love. 08 January 2010, 23:11plastic is unnecessary, unless...
I usually take a backpack with me wherever I go to avoid the need for plastic bags, but I do occasionally accept them for my roommate to use as doggy pick-up bags. 29 December 2009, 01:30fabric bags
I use reusable fabric bags that I made myself. I NEVER accept the plastic bag! 22 December 2009, 03:04i love to save the earth
my family and i never use plastic or paper bags. at school we allways recycle our plastic bags 14 December 2009, 09:41Say Oh Noh to Plastic Bags
I have a small fabric bag in a pouch attached to my key ring, so I almost never need to ask for a bag as I carry one with me at all times. And I give these bags as presents to my friends so they can try and do the same. 11 December 2009, 11:29Never use plastic bags
I have use 2 plastic bags in the last 3 years. no lie. I wish I could type in the number 1000 or something close, rather than clicking plus as it's a personal rule.I have about 15 canvas bags, and rotate them regularly to the car so it's always in there when i go to the store. I would forget otherwise. the first year i made it a rule that I would buy a new one every time I forgot. it added up and I started a new, better habit. 09 December 2009, 01:27
Shopping!!!
We always take a bag when we do our weekly shop, and always have...I think. 05 December 2009, 12:37
I'm curious...
I often wonder how the statistics compare to a few years ago. Lots of people turn down plastic bags now, and it's obviously still something that we should be encouraging. I'd really like to see how it's going. :)To Google!
Hey, I found an article about plastic bag use being halved in the UK, published July 2009. :) http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jul/17/plastic-bag-revolt-halves-use 02 December 2009, 14:38
Use an exclusively designed bag instead
look on my web site and order a unique piece of art on a bag MADE only in the Highlands of Scotland. Expensive? Good grief NOOOOOOO!ask me I dare you!
NO! I actually DO accept plastic bags, and re-use every one, because those used in Australia now break down in mere weeks.
NO!For God's sake... I *do* accept plastic bags, and I store them at home and re-use EVERY one of them as garbage bags for the garbage I throw out (real rubbish only, not recyclables). This is because most plastic bags sold in Australia (where I am) are now made from starches that decay to powder in weeks just from exposure to the air, rather than decades (as the old plastic bags did).
Doing this also avoids my having to specifically purchase black or dark green "bin liner" garbage bags for tossing out non-recyclable household waste. Those big bin bags are *reinforced*, and specifically made tough. They'll last for DECADES in the local landfill. Why would I buy these, which will still be around past 2100, when I can use the free plastic shopping bags I already have, that are now designed to decompose within a month or two? (and they do too -if I don't re-use them quick-smart, they turn to ashy powder). 18 November 2009, 04:57
I did this.
when I did the hug action i was sick and my friend offered a plastic bag and i declined and now just smell like sick 17 November 2009, 15:01Rejected a bag :)
Yesterday, when I bought a pieces of jewellery, I was offered a bag to put them in but I refused and put it in my handbag :) 15 November 2009, 16:12Keep a spare bag in the car, your handbag and at work
I've been using reusable bags for the weekly shop for ages, but always ended up with carrier bags if I did any other shoping including poping out to get lunch occaisionally at work. So I invested in one that I could put in my handbag, which then became one that I keep in the car, and another in my drawer at work. Now I have a bag with me on 99% of occaisions and have drastically reduced my carrier bag usage.
10 November 2009, 12:13Impressed an old lady too!
I always try to take my bags for life when I go to the supermarket but often forget. I went into Wimbledon on Saturday to get some shopping and once I had packed, the old lady behind me praised me on my packing skills. Who'd of thought that just recycling bags would feel so good! 09 November 2009, 18:34A smiling "No, thank you" answer. Always!
In order to avoid to forget my shopping bag at home, but also in case of not-scheduled shopping ;-) ....I've got some in my car and even one in each purse I have; so if I go shopping I'm always ready to refuse the plastic one and do my bit for the environment! 30 October 2009, 13:12
NO plastics bags
Take a cloth bag with you on your purse. Do not use bags to pack fruits and vegetables, use your own bag... 28 October 2009, 14:32=9
i dont like plastic bags and because of that i allways use one of my bags to carry the stuff at home... 28 October 2009, 14:28Green, green, green
I always do this now. It makes me feel like I am doing my bit, plus, the bags for life that you can buy are much better. They can fit a lot more shopping in - great! and you can use them for lots of things e.g. I bought a canvas bag from Primark last time I went and I used it today to fit all of my gym stuff in! 28 October 2009, 13:52Refuse Plastic Bags
As everyone probably knows, many shops now offer more sustainable bags for purchase so you can reuse them and not have to use plastic bags. In our house, we have loads of them in random places, so it's routine to grab one before going out. I would suggest, if you've bought one to put one somewhere you pass before leaving the house, that way if you think you might be shopping, you can grab it. 27 October 2009, 11:11Backpack
I always take a backpack with me when I go shopping. Like that, I've got my hands free and don't need any plastic bags. 23 October 2009, 17:53Book Store
I bought a book at a book store and declined the plastic bag they offered. 20 October 2009, 17:15say no to plastic bag !
I try to bring my shopping bag all the time so I don't need to ask plastic bag when I buy something. I've posted this topic on my blog (http://iswahyuni.wordpress.com/2008/11/23/byob-say-no-to-plastic-bags/) and some of my friends are working on this campaign also. I've encouraged my sister to do the same thing and now I'm trying to encourage my mom. Wish me luck (^o^) 17 October 2009, 05:51Letting go of plastic
Always take a hessian bag or a my good old trolley car shopping with me. 01 October 2009, 15:36No plastic bag please (smile)
Yup. That's how I do it. Every day. 01 October 2009, 15:34Cloth bags
I take my cloth bags everywhere I go. I much rather have a fantastic reusable cloth bag than think of one more plastic bag headed for the landfill, or floating in the ocean. Those thoughts made me start my own business of making bags. I take fabric that would have been thrown in the landfill, and give it a second chance! I turn unwanted fabric in to fantastic, fashionable grocery bags. Unique, and fun bags. More bags coming soon. http://threadbeaur.etsy.com 25 September 2009, 18:46Decline Plastic bags wherever possible
My name is Jennifer and I volunteer as a community outreach partner for my local food bank. I am located in Mt. Dora Florida and the name of our Non-Profit is Lake Cares Food Pantry. http://www.lakecares.org Here is my request; we need bags. We use bags to distribute our food and goods to our needy families. Easy solution, walk into a big box retailer and get a 8x8 box of 1000 plastic bags for free. Hard solution, find a company that will donate reusable type bags. I use recyclable bags and in one minute with one box I wiped out years worth of non-consumption of plastic bags. Please help. We are plastic dependent at the moment- 25 September 2009, 18:40stuip question
i was on gloster r.d birstol in somefield and got asked if i wanted a bag even thought i had one on me (not plastic) and i said no 17 September 2009, 19:13Sainsburys staff...
....are really good at asking if you want a bag. Makes you want to say no. 16 September 2009, 14:33None
I liked this site. 10 September 2009, 06:49
plastic aint my bag - paper is =]
i went shopping with my boyfriend today and made him use the carrier bags he'd already been given instead of getting one at every shop =]they were also paper bags and not plastic! 08 September 2009, 18:25
Plastic ain't my bag :)
Thanks to my lovely bag I got at the young speakers course, I don't really use plastic bags these days :) 03 September 2009, 11:30Plastic Ain't my Bag
Since having my Plastic Ain't my Bag bag, I don't think I've had a single plastic bag! 01 September 2009, 15:21Michelle
I have started to carry a bag everywhere so I can always decline a bag! 17 August 2009, 11:54If you must... recycle em
Ok, I admit I don't always think of bringing a bag with me. I usually manage to carry home the spontaneous ice cream with frozen hands. But 5 tubs is a bit much and I have to ask for a bag. Consequently I get a little ball of bags stuck under my kitchen sink.I found that I can recycle them at my local Sainsbury's though. Not as good as not taking them in the first place - but better than nothing.
tesco
used the bag i already had that WASNT plastic 09 July 2009, 20:47No thanks
I've been quite conscious of using plastic bags since joining We Are What We Do, and I've actually been using my "Plastic ain't my bag" bag from the training to put all my stuff into whenever I can. I'm also hassling my mum at regular intervals to do the same :) 09 July 2009, 20:19--
I take my Plastic Ain't My Bag with me everywhere and challenge myself to never accept a plastic bag wherever I shop. 06 July 2009, 13:56i say no to plastic
i take my bag from we are what we do and use it when i go to the shops!! i even use it for my pack lunch at work :) 04 July 2009, 20:38--
When i go shopping i take my own bag and put things i buy in it instead of getting a plastic bag 04 July 2009, 17:20Have you heard of
again and a-gain see www.againanda-gain.com for reusable nets for fruit and veg and bread. 10 June 2009, 20:50
im sik of when ur in a shop and they start putting stuff in a bag and u say "i dont need a bag" but they still put in in one and say "iv put it in already".
Also when does "no thanks" sound like "yes please"?? I was in a shop and she asked if i wanted a bag and i said no but she put it in one any way. >:( 20 May 2009, 10:08
Make bags to give away and replace plastic ones
Look at www.morsbags.com for a great idea. 21 March 2009, 16:55
Dump plastic bags?
I just dumped all my plastic bags... at my local library. They seemed very grateful! I also sometimes give any plastic bags I have to charity shops. That way, they don't clog up my kitchen (or hopefully a landfill site) and get re-used by someone else... 26 August 2008, 07:50
string bags at reusablebags.com
no, i neither work for nor own stock in reusablebags.com - but i LOVE their string bags. organic cotton, hold up to 40 lbs each, tiny and malleable eough to always have a few in my purse, they are totally worth investing in a set. i am like a string bag evangelist everytime i'm at the grocery store or farmer's market and folks ask about them. they rule. oh -get the long handled ones that fit over your shoulder. comfy and convenient! 08 August 2008, 19:27
Cloth bags!!!
In the states, we have $1 stores. The one that I frequent have cloth bags for $1. They are great for groceries and other department store bought items. It not only keeps the "plastic or Paper" dilemma down, it also slows my spending down to how much I can fit into the bags. hmmm... Two birds, CLOTH BAGS! :) 05 August 2008, 23:11
Plastic is Greener!
I too thought that paper bags were the way to go- except now the it's being reported that Plastic is Greener! Plastic bags actually make less of a mark on the world, and can be reused/recycled so much easier! So rest easy- recycle them! (Or if you're like me, use them for trash bags in all your mini- trash cans, for cat-pan liners, to bag yardsale purchases...whatever you can think of!) 05 August 2008, 04:14
Paper or Plastic
I was asking for paper instead of plastic, but the USEPA reports that it takes 13 to 17 trees to make one ton of paper bags and that it takes more than 4x as much energy to manufacture a paper bag as it does a plastic bag. Plastic grocery bags generate 80% less solid waste than paper bags and it takes 91% less energy to recycle a pound of plastic than it takes to recycle a pound of paper. Paper bags generate 70% more air and 50% more water pollution. Current research show that paper bags don't breakdown in todays landfills any faster than plastic. I do agree with the cloth bag solution, but with 5 people,2 cats, and a dog to feed shopping day is huge! Any other solutions?

Shopping Bags
I found durable, water resistant shopping bags - in the beach section of the dollar store! The bags have a sturdy, squared bottom and extra pockets to organize purchases.
These bags are much easier to carry than the plastic bags too! 23 July 2008, 10:16
France says 'non' to the plastic bag
It is a shame there are no photos of the consternation on the face of the English people (us) when having bought a huge amount of shopping, we looked around for bags to put it in. The cashier watched with faint Gallic amusement as we flapped about before taking pity on us and telling us that there were cardboard boxes 'la bas'. And then it dawned...no single use carrier bags in the hypermarket. Was it just here? No, in all the supermarkets and shops we used, no one used plastic bags. Of course, being ecohousewife I had a shopping bag with me and the boxes became a fixture for a week in the car. There was no panic, nobody was refusing to shop because they could not have a plastic bag with 'HyperChampion' written all over it.
And now back in England, I watch in the queue as dozens of bags are handed out to supermarket customers, sometimes with only one item in them. You can't all have come in here on a whim and then bought a week's shopping. Did you suddenly realise that you were out of milk, bread and tea bags while sauntering up the high street and that it why you have to put three items into an enormous bag? Can you really not carry that can of coke and a cheese sandwich in your hand until you get to where you're going? Oh yes, you like to use them for your rubbish. Will that be the small bags you leave next to the bins or in the gutter on Green Lanes. Sorry, but free rubbish bag with every purchase isn't really good enough. Shopping bags not cool? If my husband, northern beer drinking man par excellence, can be persuaded to use a shopping bag, so can you...so for today at least, Vive la France!

Change the World Challenge
Hi I am Elaine Henderson I am 21years old. I have been a student at St Elizabeth’s college for 2 years. St Elizabeth’s is a college for young adults with learning difficulties and this term one of our projects has been Change the World Challenge. We designed and made 50 bags using different materials such as felt, fabric pens and paints. We have made colourful and eye catching posters advertising the different challenges and in return for taking on a challenge each person will be given a bag .
During this project we learnt about people who don’t take plastic bags with them when they shop and keep using and buying new ones which is bad for the environment. We also learnt about people filling the kettle with water to make only one cup of tea and using lots of electricity.
With our posters and bags we are going to encourage and hopefully inspire others to take up the challenge and Change the world too !
We are doing this on Monday 14th July at 2.30 at St Elizabeth’s Centre at Much Hadham, Herts.
Best wishes Elaine

Plastic Bags
I work in customer services in retail so when someone returns a something and gives back the bag rather than bin it I try to re-use everyone when someone buys something new! Ive also got my work place to sort out the paper from plastic and drink cans to seperate bins :) Dont be scared to tell your boss cause they will enjoy employees getting involved 27 June 2008, 14:46
Decline Plastic bags for good!!!!!!!!!!!!!
11 students at St Elizabeths College have been doing Change the World challenge. We think it is important to decline plastic bags because people throw bags away after they use it which makes bad poloution... The poor animals in the world get strangled with plastic bags and sometimes die. It is not good!!!!!! We have decorated 50 re-usable bags using felt and paint and our own designs and we are going to give it to people if they agree to complete one of we are what we do challenges. 02 June 2008, 11:16

A good start
I bought some school shoes for my son a few weeks ago. They came in a box with a small handle fitted, so no bag was necessary. The shop assistant in Clarks just said "oh, you don't need a bag for that, do you". I was SOOOO pleased that someone was really making an effort. Well done Clarks and well done Bootleg shoes. 30 May 2008, 10:05
Boots
when i was in boots i said to the woman i didnt want a bag 3 times and she still gave me a bag! all the other people on the checkouts were asking if ppl were wanting a bag. i ran down to asda and put the bag in their plastic bag bin.
in anouther shop the woman asked me if i wanted a bag, i said no and she still gave me 1???
i h8 plastic bags. they hurt my hands and get shredded to pieces on the buckles on ma boots, my reusable one goes over my shoulder so its much better to carry :)

Boots and their bags
I work in Boots and the other people I work with all use bags for tiny things people buy. Although its not company policy I have started asking people if they need a bag and a surprisingly large number of them can fit their goods in their handbags/another carrier bag.If a member of staff gives you a bag and you dont want one just tell them and they will (hopefully) gladly take it back. 18 May 2008, 15:37
Boots and Bags
Yet another plastic bag story.
Only a little while ago I was telling a friend that when it comes to giving away plastic bags, Boots seemed particularly bad at it.
You could buy something tiny - a packet of Nurofen or a lipsalve - and the person serving you would automatically put it into a plastic bag.
Today however, I bought something from Boots - a lipsalve - and the man behind the till said it loud and proud. 'Do you need a bag?' I was impressed because I heard other people say the same thing and it would seem that overnight, Boots has changed.
The same now happens in Pret a Manger, although I think they have been doing it for longer.

Claire's Accessories
claire's is probaly the worsst shop for giving out plastic bags. i went in there an bought a reuseable bag (!), it was only £2 and folds up really small and is quite big wen unfolded, the girl serving me gave me a plastic bag for it b4 i could say i didnt want one. i go to the shop a lot and weneva possible say i dont need a bag. its really anoyng them selling the reusable bags then giving u a bag for thay and if i just buy a small pair of earings.
i think shops should ask u if u want a bag b4 giving you one. when i worked in the cancer research shop i would always ask and most of the people said they ddnt need 1 :)but some people would take a bag when they were buying one item (someone took a bag for 1 birthday card!! 10 May 2008, 11:20
decline the bags...
I thought that it had only happened to me!!! I had to be very calm with a lady in a major department store who told me I may be searched because I didn't want a bag .... even though I had the receipt. But then if it has been part of your customer service training to offer a bag, and place the goods in them (and you have been doing this happily for years) then you simply may not understand why someone would decline your kind offer. I now just explain that I don't do bags. It is getting better. And if you smile while you are saying it... well better still.

It's not rocket science...
I started declining plastic bags several months ago. At first people looked at me like I was an alien- they even suggested that I may be searched by security when leaving the store- but things are definitely changing for the better. It takes very little effort to be prepared with a re-usable bag.
It is not just the supermarkets at fault, I feel. Walking down the High Sreet, you only have to see people with 5 or 6 different plastic carriers to realise that these bags should be banned by EVERYONE and consumers should wise up and do their bit. It isn't hard, definitelt not rocket science. 09 April 2008, 09:28

Howies...the shop
Yesterday I went to the Howies shop in Carnaby Street. It's exactly how you would expect a Howies shop to be. There's a tap where you can fill up your water bottle. There are people who are friendly and probably ride mountain bikes up and down mountains. When they get the chance.
I took along a copy of our book Change the World for a Fiver and rather cheekily asked if they would stock it. The answer was 'no' which is fair enough, but I was invited to donate our book to their collection. Upstairs there is a bookshelf full of books. You can browse while you are shopping and you can even take a book along and swap it for one on the shelf. I noticed that we were in good company. I spotted a copy of Good Business by Giles Gibbons and Steve Hilton.

Use your hands - use your head
How many of us visit the local shop for top-ups on milk, eggs, missed out sore cupboards and even treats.
It's a short trip and you may have walked - may have taken the car.
Most things are easy to carry, especially a short distance (most plastic milk cartons have handles and potatoes coem in their own bag).
Your car has a perfect footwell or seat to place the items on.
So say 'NO THANKS' when offered a plastic bag - your hands can carry most things perfectly easily.
Alternatively, put a collapsable box in the car and put your newly bought items in there, til you get home. 16 March 2008, 10:04
Box it up
Keep a collapsable box in your boot (they are approx. £2.00 in most good supermarkets).
Put the box in the trolley and go shopping
Re-fill at the check-out.
Decline the plastic bags the supermarket offer.
Wheel your trolley to your car.
Lift into your car.
Drive home.
Take box into house and put shopping away.
Remember to put box back into car for next time. 16 March 2008, 09:58

Hemp bags paying for themselves
Our local grocery chain is giving a $.10 credit for each plastic bag not used. When I use my two hemp bags I get $.20 credit, which over time will pay for themselves and do something wonderful for the planet! 22 February 2008, 12:35
supermarkets just so don't get it with the plastic
I'm stunned... Ocado think its a good idea to issue their drivers with disposable plastic overshoes!!!!! This is the most riduculously wasteful idea they've ever had, I can't believe it! So we're all really trying reducing our use of plastic bags and they're issuing staff with disposable plastic overshoes? How dirty can feet get on their journey from van to house? They need to tell drivers that their shoes have always looked fine to me and puhleeas never wear them round here. I am extremely disppointed by this development as I shop with Waitrose because of their sound ethical reputation on issues such as sustainable fish etc but this waste of resources is seriously making me reconsider. Please make them stop this unenvironmental, wasteful, unnnecessary practice.

ditch that plastic!
I was in town with my mother and I went into the book shop and these wonderful 100% cotton bags caught my eye. I was quite low on change so, my gran gave me the money, saying, "Ooooh, i havent gave you anything for ages love!"I left the shop proudly with my, 'Plastic ain't my bag' bag. When I got home I looked at my bag just to find the link to this brilliant site!

www.whalebags.com
I was fed up with plastic bags so I decided to take some action back in Easter last year. I am a Primary school teacher but in my spare time I designed a new eco-shopping bag which I called a Whalebag. I knew that people, even with the best will in the world, forget to take bags with them, so I designed my bag to specifically tackle this problem. Also bags for life invariably are too small - the whalebags are very large! Finally I wanted people to become aware of how plastic bags damage the marine wildlife who mistake them for jelly fish, eat them and die! Well things have gone from there and now I am teaching part time so that I can market my bags! If your interested check out my website, http://www.whalebags.com but more importantly join the campaign against plastic bags! 11 February 2008, 13:41

My mug tree needs that mug!
My oh my - so many telephone calls made today, my throat is so dry - i need a cup of tea, preferably in a special mug. I am part of a team organising the second Community Money Marketplace in Essex - it's a funding advice and information event for voluntary and community groups based in Essex and we decided to keep the event as green as possible. It's the custom at these sort of events, to give out bags full of paper and stuff - we decided that plastic just isn't our bag, and I've spent a day on the telephone to district councils and various organisations trying to get 50 or 100 cotton bags out of them to make up the 500 we need. And you know what?? We're getting there !!! Hurrah! But I really need that tea ...

the first battle
i was out shopping with my mum and i had brought my " Plastics not my bag " bag with me because we were doing "light" shopping at our local store ( ALdi) and then she decided to do the week shop instead ! When i told her i had only brought one bag she said we'll just get plastic then ... but i convinced her to buy a reusable instead. ( Now we have 5 or 6 and 3 of those are quite big) 24 January 2008, 15:04
Big Pockets
Whenever we went grocery shopping, my girlfriend would tell the cashier not to bag our small orders. I picked up on this, and since I'm generally just buying groceries for myself I'll just tell the cashier not to bag anything. Luckily, I have a coat with big pockets.

Please dont remind us we're not being helpful
I re-use bags/use fabric 'shopping bags' and hate the amount of plastic carrier bags given out. However, I also work in a supermarket while I'm at uni and we have to ask if you want a bag, much as it winds me up to do it - especially when people take one for one or two items that could be carried. So, instead of telling those of us sat on the tills who dont want to be giving you the bag in the first place, write to or see the manager instead? Please?
And you know that smile and smile back action - we have a lot of rude people to deal with, so we really do appreciate a smile! 14 January 2008, 07:19

Sometimes I am ashamed to be a Canadian!
Hi there,
I have to say I despise plastic bags. My husband and I for oh the last 5 years always take our cloth bags to shop and if we forget, we carry it out in our hands.
I read about the ban in Devon, San Francisco, even in a little town in Manitoba right here in Canada that has outright bans and yet Toronto cannot get their act together.
They believe instead to give people incentives as a way to deter but I feel that it is an ineffective approach to a really bad situation. Canada is a huge country! I see the amount of bags in the landfill everytime we take our garbage from the cottage to the dump and witness the bears chomping on our mess. I wonder how many they accidentally ingest.
Sometimes I feel so helpless, I want to just shake some sense into some people and say wake up! Don't they realize the massive damage they create each time they do a massive grocery shop and blindly accept those double bagged groceries.
I cannot tell you how many times I have had to fight with some grocery clerks insisting "no bag" and they say "oh but this will break.." Well then I will take my chances I say.
As a canadian I am ashamed and appalled at our lack of interest in this situation and not being
proactive and more responsible for our actions. 04 January 2008, 17:17
refusing plastic bags
Hi, im English, and i live in sumerset. I used to live in London, and when i went back there, i was shocked to see how many supermarkets are lavish with plastic bags. In the countryside, people just bring cardboard boxes or fabric bags with them to shops, and its actually much easier than having to try and open the plastic ones. Plus, plastic bags take up to 500 years to degrade in landfill. And anyway, fabric ones are way more cute!

Plastic's not The Works bag?
Christmas shopping in bookshop The Works, they had loads of the new Plastics Not My Bag bags hanging up behind the counter, for sale.
Sadly, they still automatically reach for a plastic bag for your purchases, but I got there with my "no thanks, I have a bag" before it was too late!
So the re-usable bags are out there, but maybe some shops need to look adjusting their staff training??

free fabric shopping bags
http://www.morsbags.com is a website showing how to make fabric shopping bags from left over fabric, which are then given away free on the high street to shoppers. Obviously some of the bags made are kept for personal use! Fabric is donated, through freecycle, or left over jumle sale stuff, or charity shops that have stuff they can't sell, to give just a few examples. I make morsbags, and in October marched up and down Tavistock high street with a friend and gave away 100 free bags to shoppers. There is a great supportive online community of morsbaggers, both in the UK and abroad, giving help, advice and support about making the bags - this is such a simple way to say no to plastic bags, not only in supermarkets, but in all shops. And anyone can afford a morsbag, they are free!11 December 2007, 08:33
How to get people to reduce using plastic bags?
Hello all...
Im still in High School, and I am really intrested in the camplain to get people to reduce using plastic bags. Is there a way to get the message out to shops? To get the shop-keeper/manager of a store to stop using plastic bags? I would really like to do that, but don't know how. Especially here in Dubai(UAE) people use a lot of plastic bags, and they aren't recycled much. So, I would like to know how to actually get the stores to stop using plastic bags, instead use paper bags, or promote others to use their own regualar bag.
-Thanks :)

Declining bags down under too
So good to read your stories and know I'm not alone. I brought back some fantastic waitrose reusable bags last time I was in the UK and am now using them in New Zealand. The check out staff almost always comment on how robust they are. The supermarkets here sell reusable bags too, but change is oh so slow and far too many people are still using too many plastic bags. 04 December 2007, 20:11Bagging my own.
While buying groceries at Trader Joes, I brought with me a large re-useable bag and proceeded to bag my purchases while being checked out. Before leaving, the cleark asked me to wait a minute; he ran off then returned with a box of caramel covered chocolates. He said this was his gift to me for helping him do his job and for helping our environment. Yummy!

Plastic Bags
Hi. I'm English but am living in Belgium at the moment and I must say most of the supermarket chains here don't give out plastic bags anymore. You buy boxes or bags which are intended to be used again and the majority of people do.
I can't understand why UK supermarkets are so slow to stop giving them out so easily. I was totally shocked when I went into ASDA when I was last back in the UK, so much waste without any thought to actual need. I saw people packing just one or two items into a single bag and walking out of the shop under a mountain of plastic. It REALLY annoys me so much.
03 December 2007, 15:23
get rich plastic ditch
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that since ditching plastic bags they are spending less? When I bring my cotton shopper out I will cunningly, tactically fill it - but no more. I spend smarter and save money. If I'm getting plastic bags from Tesco's or Fresh & Wild, I'll spend with impunity. And go home in debt, overladen and with no circulation to my fingertips. I'm all for this environmentalism but to my mind, in the upcome to Christmas, it makes plain, mercenary Scroogly sense too. 03 December 2007, 13:24

Plastic Ain't My Bag in John Lewis
John Lewis isn't the best shop when it comes to thinking about plastic.
When I am shopping, I am often given a plastic bag for the tiniest item. Whenever I decline, it seems to cause a problem because the person at the till then has to fold up the bag and it tends to unsettle them. Which is why you have to be quick off the mark and say 'I don't need a bag!' before they've taken one from their seemingly endless stock. The other day I was in John Lewis in Welwyn Garden City at the Origins counter. Rather than go through the whole exchange again, I proudly swivelled to display my Marie Claire Plastic Ain't My Bag bag. Without wanting to be evangelical - and I realise that I am probably sounding extremely worthy and boring - the Origins person said 'I'm going to get one of those bags too.' It made me think that it just makes life easier if you can carry a message over your shoulder. And it feels much better than wearing a t-shirt with a slogan. It just means that you have to slightly turn your body to the side so that people can read what's on your bag. Which is of course a nice little twist that helps to keep you flexible. 26 November 2007, 00:00
Neither's any sort of packaging if I can help it..
I bought some bedding in a smart department store in Tunbridge Wells. Each item came in a zip-up plastic bag - OK re-usable, but I didn't want to re-use them. So I asked if I could take the goods out of the packaging and leave the packaging in the shop (that's what they do in Germany). The young lady said yes (she wasn't British and actually didn't look surprised at my request!) and I duly took my goods out of the packaging and transferred them to the bag I was already carrying.
I shall try that again!

Responsibility of Dog Owners Goes Further!
It's great that us dog owners feel responsible to pick up the poo. This goes further though and there seems a better answer than a supermarket carrier which generally isn't biodgradable (well eventually)! You can buy biodegradable poo bags, made from vegetable matter and which won't harm animals if they eat them. Fab! 11 November 2007, 00:00
I can't believe this!!
Hi! I live in small town, midwest america where no one thinks anything affects them. I was shopping at our locally owned grocery store last week. When I checked out, I only had 2 items and I had not brought my canvas bag. The clerk had my 2 items in a plastic bag before I noticed what was happening. I told her, "No thanks, I don't need the bag". She answered with, "Are you sure?' which was accompanied by a puzzeled look. When I insisted that she save the bag for the next person, she crumpled it and tossed it into the trash right in front of me! I told her that defeated my purpose, to please hand it to me and I will recycle it myself at the recycling box that sits just inside the grocery store door! My mind was boggled!! We are trying! 11 November 2007, 00:00
But what about...
Us dog owners? We must, must clear up after our dogs and if plastic bags are phased out completely what shall we use to pick up their poo? A handy supermarket carrier bag covers the hand completely when scooping and totally contains the "heap" produced by my greyhound. Big dog, big poo. Oh yes, and I have two of them. Don't tell me "pick it up in a paper bag". That won't work! 08 November 2007, 00:00
plastic ain't my hat either
I H8 PLASTIC BAGS!!!
THEY SMELL JUST LIKE ME!!!! 08 November 2007, 00:00
The shops don't like the bags either!
When I worked in WHSmith, we felt resentment every time someone asked for a bag for an item they could have carried in their pockets; things like pens or pencil sharpeners even. We were always overjoyed everytime a customer declined a bag, and felt a sort of joint acheivement with the cusotmer...one lees bag for them, one more bag for someone else to refuse. Unfortunately, WHSmith's policy is ALWAYS ask the customer if they want a bag. The automatic response is yes. Basically, what I'm trying to say here is keep up the good work! Wened to raise awareness here. 08 November 2007, 00:00
Guilty or not?
I was faced with a dilemma. Purchase a magazine which increases pollution (even though I recycle) but with it get a free plastic ain't my bag shopper. My wish to add to my cotton shopping bag collection won out & I must say the free bag with Marie Claire is great. The handle is reinforced & will last a long time. To off-set this the handles of my free environment day June '06 which I got at Newcastle's green festival finally "died" after being used evey day since then! Although it will still be used to store my paper before recycling.
I am also in a dilemma- do I pass my magazine around or do I encourage my friends to buy their own & thus increase the circulation of bags? 06 November 2007, 00:00

Hello! I've recently joined a website called Morsbags. The basic idea is that people start or join 'pods' which are groups of people who get together and make reusable cloth bags from recycled fabrics. They then give these bags away for FREE to anyone and everyone! The website is fab and has a great forum where you can chat to fellow morsbaggers! Argos Carrier Bags
I wrote to Argos regarding the recent Argos catalogues appearing ready-plastic bagged in their store. I am not sure their response to this is great.
Reason for enquiry (header) - Feedback
Reason for enquiry (specific) - Other feedback
Comments - I was dismayed to find that the current Argos catalogue was supplied to me in my local Castle Vale (Birmingham) store in a plastic carrier bag. Why? This has never happened before. We should all be trying to reduce our environmental impact and blue-chip organisations such as Argos should be leading this. If every Argos catalogue is in a carrier bag, all the good work that retailers such as Tesco and Sainsbury are doing is being undone. I hope that you review this new initiative and realise that it is sending out the wrong messages to the public..
I look forward to your response.
From Argos:
Dear Mr XXXX,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding your comments.
I am sorry that you were so dismayed at our attempt to assist customers in carrying there new catalogue home, the carriers used are recycled and hopefully will be recycled again once customers have used then for ease of carriage home.
Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at order.enquiries@argos.co.uk or call us on 0870 600 2020.

Mr XXXX
Dear Mr XXXX,
Thank you for your e-mail pertaining to your concerns raised regarding the Argos catalogue being offered in a carrier bag.
I was sorry that you were not pleased with the previous response, and can advise that the catalogue bagging system is customer driven due to the weight of the catalogue.
I can advise that we are continuously striving to reduce packaging on our products, and now offer our full range of products on-line to eliminate the customer requiring a catalogue.
Unfortunately not every customer has internet access, or prefers to peruse the catalogue, which can be recycled by ourselves.
We do also encourage giving out fewer carrier bags in our stores, and old unwanted furniture can also be recycled be the furniture re-use network.
For more information please check out the recycling section of www.argos.co.uk which I hope will alleviate your concerns.
Yours sincerely

plastic ain`t my bag
Hi, my name is Alina, i`m 28 years old and i live in Romania. I`m a member of civil society and i have a very good opinion about your movement... I hear about We are what we do campaign and i ask a friend of mine who live in UK to buy for me I`m not a plastic bag... Today I refuse, not for the first time, a plastic bag... but this time the saleswomen told me, smiling: I now u, u was here before... I wasn`t, not with my new bag... I`t wasn`t me but I was very happy to hear there are more people in Romania who refuse plastic bags :)23 October 2007, 00:00
more bags
Since the mid sixties I try to struggle against the habit to wrap even a single article in a plastic bag. For my young friends and relatives I liked to invent alternatives. So often I would add a bag in textile to a present. Little by little they got the message. Over the years just for fun we tried to imagine how many plastic bags we avoided - really amazing. Small is still beautiful... 13 October 2007, 00:00It's a start
My partner and I run a market stall that refuses plastic bags to the customers. We started selling jute shopping bags to get people to think about waste and now we sell recycled and fair trade bags from all over the world.
We hate the fact that it takes the poor of third world countries to show us in the supposed 1st world the way to go with reduction and reuse.
Our slogan is "You can't unmake a plastic bag, but you can refuse one." 03 October 2007, 00:00

As well as the informal vote on the WAWWD homepage, Londoners now have the chance to influence council policy on taxing (or otherwise) the use of plastic bags. See http://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/doc.asp?docId=20764 for more details. This could be your chance to make a difference... do let them know what you think! 14 September 2007, 00:00the Trash-too bag
Why not carry our purchases into a nice Trash-Too bag, purchased at the cashout ?I know about a bag who looks like a "Bag for life", and could be reused several times, but afterwards, when the need is there, he is converted into a big grey trash bag. Very efficient. 05 September 2007, 00:00

Fake Bags On Ebay
I want to warn everyone about the horrible problem on Ebay with fake Anya Hindmarch\'s \"I\'m Not A Plastic Bag.\" It is absolutely out of control and Ebay does very little to stop those sellers who deal in counterfeit bags. Buyer Beware! Ms. Hindmarch has done a wonderful job to raise the consciouness of the overuse of plastic bags. Unfortunately, so many sellers could care less and it\'s all about making a quick buck at Ms. Hindmarch\'s expense. 25 August 2007, 00:00Onya Bags
I have discovered these great bags made from really strong light parachute material called Onya Bags: http://www.onyabags.co.uk/index.php They screw up really small and have a clip so you can carry them on your keyring - great! So you have an emergency bag whenever you need one and don't have to resort to getting ANOTHER plastic bag to add to the endless collection you already have at home shoved in a drawer....... 21 August 2007, 00:00No Plastic Bag pls and keep on recycling
A simple act will influence someone around you. Use a recycling bag for groceries shopping, use less paper in office, place bottles in recycle bins, buy clothing from the net, conserve energy, segregate rubbish into waste and recycle items. A very simple act makes a lots of difference to save the mother earth. INFLUENCE is the words. So NO plastic bag for me ,pls. 21 August 2007, 00:00Discount on BYOB...
A local market now gives .05 off your total for each bag you bring yourself. It's not much money, but it does show that they are listening, in addition to selling mosly organic or local produce. We have a voice and while we are not quite a yell, we are more than a whisper!! 16 August 2007, 00:00I'm not a plastic bag
I amazingly managed to get 2 "I'm not a plastic bag" bags, each for £5, so I have one at work and one at home. I actually use them for the purpose they were intended: putting my shopping in so I can refuse plastic bags. The frenzy around the bags seems to have worked. I have noticed more shops seem to be asking if you actually need a bag rather than just automatically putting your goods into one. There was also a programme on Channel 4 made by the owner of "Lush" re the UK's obsession with packaging and how much it is costing us and the planet. The message is certainly being repeated, I just hope that it is being heard. 20 July 2007, 00:00Fresh Fruit & Veg Plastic Bags
The supermarkets all seem to be trying to use some form of recycling/bag for life bags for shopping to cut down on carrier bags. What about the plastic bags we all put our fresh fruit and veg in. Is there nothing that we could re-used each time we shop like the net bags you get oranges etc in? 20 July 2007, 00:00Plastic bags are NOT the problem.
I just wanted to let anyone who reads this know that you are probably wasting your time complaining about plastic bags for three reasons. FIrst, plastic bags are recyclable. All you have to do is stuff a bunch of them into a single bag and the city will recycle them. Second, plastic bags are made from polymers and all polymers are biodegradeable (check out your science books). Finally, using plastic bags means not cutting down trees. I would suggest focusing some more effort on encouraging your local politicians to actually recycle the materials they take in. You might be surprised to learn that the majority of the recycleable material that the city of Seattle collects ends up in a landfill with the rest of the garbage. 26 June 2007, 00:00Primark paper bags
Further to the comments about Primark, my local store has paper bags and most people seem to get this rather than the plastic ones. Not sure if this depends on the particular branch. Also I take my own bag (INAPB) to get my newspaper otherwise I get a plastic bag every day... sounds like the same store commented on previously as they also have a signs and badges about saving trees and refusing a bag. 25 June 2007, 00:00i luv plastic bags
I would just like 2 say i dont know wat all the fuss about plastic bags. I luv them. u can use them as boats, wellys, hats, mini skirts, forms of underwear and many other things. 19 June 2007, 00:00opinion poll???
I can not believe that in your Opinion poll most people would be happy to be charged more for a plastic bag than to find alternative Ideas. I am sure what we all need to be doing is seriously looking at alternatives for our shopping. Not just paying an extra 10p in hope it will put people off using a plastic one. I might have once laughed at my late grans shopping trolley, but as I look back I can not remember ever once, seeing her with a plastic bag!! & that trolley was older than me hows that for recycling. 15 June 2007, 00:00Plastic bags
Every day I go into a large well known newsagent/stationers for my newspapers. Every day the same assistant serves me and every day she says "I'll just put these in a bag for you". I always tell her "no thanks - I have a bag", and she always gives me "the look". Right next to her is a large notice stating how that retailer wants to help save the planet by not using plastic bags!! Staff training is clearly required!! That particular assistant just won't take the hint! 13 June 2007, 00:00Plastic Bags
I think all countrys should be charged for plastic bags. Yes I may be only a child but I think my opinions ar as important as anyone elses, because we are all part of this world. I live in Ireland and since 2002 we have had to pay 15c (roughly 10p) for every plastic bag we buy. Before the change, on average every peron in Ireland used 310 plastic bags a year. Since the changes it is about 100 a year for each person. And thats the difference after 5 years. Imagine what It will be after 20, 30, 50 years? THanks for reading, Madii...x 09 June 2007, 00:00Plastic Primark
Bad news to all flip-flop lovers... And everybody else who likes shopping in Primark because it's: Cheap Colourful Accessible Whatever What it is not however is environmentally friendly. I just found out that the official policy of Primark is "that all purchases, without exception, be placed in a bag provided for that purpose". That is a quote from the e-mail I recieved from Primark Customer Relations Department. In other words, you shall not refuse a plastic bag. You won't be allowed to refuse. When I tried, a sales assistant's friendly advice was: "Oh, just take it and bin it outside". I sheepishly agreed and then secretely gave it to another sales assistant in Primark and hoped that he did not "just bin it". As a result, I won't be buying anything from Primark anymore, - even though I'm sorry to miss my source of cheap flip-flops. 08 June 2007, 00:00primark
I love Primark, who doesnt? I was tring to refuse their plastic bag but they said I must have it as its for security reasons. Could someone do something please. 08 June 2007, 00:00Bin bags
I live in Belgium and they have a great record for recycling. We have to put non-recyclable rubbish in special bin liners with the name of our local council on them. These are substantially more expensive than black liners and because of this we all recycle our rubbish and have it collected regularly. The council sends out a voucher for a free roll of liners twice a year. This isn't a stealth tax. We are all happy to buy them and to recycle. Perhaps something UK councils could do? 29 May 2007, 00:00a cautionary tale from a london lunchhour
today, in the sandwich place where i go to get lunch everyday...'oh, no bag thank you,' i said to the plastic bag, just after he took it from the little string thing they have. 'you should have said before,' he said, firmly packing my stuff into it. 'hmm', i mused. took out stuff, handed him back the bag, 'you can use it for someone else', i said, for some reason.
not only did he then levelly look at me whilst tearing it up and then put it into the bin, but he then looked at me and winked, like i was one of his female customers/victims. deterred, but not entirely defeated (more depressed than annoyed, i guess, but i think because it was him, i was a bit of both), i managed to stop him from giving me an extra paper bag, with a humourless gaze.
how very depressing, i thought to myself. no crusading spirit on this score, just gently mentioning, and also knowing by the end that really, he knew exactly why i had said this to him in the first place. dyou know the maddening bit? the whole thing is a game where he thought, to his delight, that hed found a belief in me which he could insult. imagine that? honestly, must i really be the subject of some person (who, actually, i see every day, and every day try to greet in a friendly fashion to, id have to say, pretty much no response whatsoever, ever) wanting to assert a kind of power-by-reduction/derision? was he really so delighted to have found, as he imagined, something that i cared about that he could then insult in front of me? really, i cant imagine ive done anything to deserve this.
gosh. i just wanted a toasted ciabatta with mozzarella, salami, basil and olive oil, for goodness sake.
and, dyou know, i walked from the sandwich shop understanding a lot more about people than i did before, a lot more about beliefs, about humiliation and, yes, about war and civil conflict.
